Day 21 : Get on the Grass

You heard me, get off the damn sidewalk.
This is something I've been telling folks for nearly 40 years, since my days of running barefoot. (that will be another post)

"Why should I do that?" You ask. "It's smooth, flat and safe."
Well, you just answered your own question.
Pavement is smooth, flat, safe and hard. None of these are good for you, your feet and most importantly, your bones.

The biggest culprit is hard. Why do you think shoes have so much padding? Those super thick soles and cushy shoe liners are an effort to compensate for the unyielding surface of pavement.
You've heard the old saying "like hitting a brick wall." Well, that's what happens to your body with every step. Doubly so when you're running or jogging.

Most research on footwear has always been an effort to try and deal with the problem of how to lower the impact of every step you take on pavement.
It's not just sidewalks and parking lots, but nearly every modern building except for your house, has cement floors.
They may be covered with tile, carpeting or wood laminate, but they are still rock hard and unyielding cement underneath.
So the next time you're out for a walk, especially if you feel any pain, step to the side and walk in the grass a bit. You'll probably notice an almost instant lowering of joint pain in the feet and knees.

Be careful, it's a bit uneven!
Yes, this is the other reason to get off the pavement! Because it's flat, smooth and safe.

This is a long-term problem that most folks, even specialists, have not grasped yet.
Nature is always changing, and that means the ground you are walking on. Every step you take on the grass is different from the next. A tuft of grass here, a low spot there, a pebble or stick.
"But that's why I stay on the sidewalk, it's smooth and safe."
Seems like good logic now, but in 50 years, dead wrong.

If you've spent most of your life off the grass, you might actually find it hard to walk on. You might find it a bit unsettling to your sense of balance. And you'll be right. Not because the ground is uneven, but because your sense of balance has been atrophied from years of non-use.
Your feet are actually the lower sensors for your balance control system.
Your feet constantly send signals to a your head with every step. A constant stream of up, down, back, side, bump, soft, hard, etc. All those signals being regulated by your brain, in an effort to keep you upright.
Those are the signals as you walk in nature, on pavement, it's more like hard, hard, hard, hard. The same signals, day in and day out.

As time goes by, you may notice a strange uneasiness on grass. You seem to be unsteady on your feet, and you rush back to the pavement. As the years go by, you might find yourself stumbling over the smallest change in that flat, hard world. A crack in the sidewalk, the edge of the carpet, or even stairs. You start looking for handholds as you go through your day, railings, walls, table edges and chairs.

Then one day, for no apparent reason, you just topple over. If you are lucky, it's just an embarrassing moment as folks come around to help you backup. If you are not, it's a broken wrist, elbow, or hip and you are heading to the hospital, rehab or casket.

So, just like all the other bad habits you've learned over the years, now's your chance to change another for the better.
Start taking a few steps off that hard, man-made world, and get back to nature where you belong.

Get back on the grass.

Day 20 : Push On

And just keep counting...
The last couple of days, I've been bored with my Diet 1, and with this blog.

Being an out of control idea generator with ADD doesn't help. If I spend more than a couple minutes on any one idea, two more drift off, never to be seen again.
A problem compounded as short-term memory loss creeps in, day by day.

But I just keep counting...
Yes, this is about that cheapo pedometer on my waist. It's a daily reminder of my commitment to my Diet 1.
It's also a reminder of what I have achieved. A little gold star hanging on my belt, reminding me that I really did walk that far yesterday. Even though I only seem to remember how much I sat on my butt.

No matter how much of my Diet 1 I flubbed today, nearly every time I go out the door, I take a look at that screen and it pushes me on.
Yes it's worked its way into being a habit, and that is what we're working on. 1 new habit at a time. If we can turn just one Diet 1 ideas into a habit, we are doing great.
If we can manage 1 new habit a month, we are way ahead of the curve.
So just keep pushing on.
1 step at a time.
1 bite at a time.
And 1 good habit at a time.

Day 19 : The Doldrums

Or Dull Drums.
That faint thought drumming in your head saying "I'm tired of all this." That time, in every commitment you have ever had, that it's just not worth the effort. Or you are just plain bored.

Forcing down that first, small glass of water every morning, drawing that big black 1 on your thumb, or just trying to find a marker to draw it with.
Just remembering to do 1 bite at a time seams like a hassle.

Try writing this blog every day! Trying to come up with something you think anybody would want to read.
1 problem is, it's that time of year. It's getting colder, nights are getting longer, and nature all around you is going into hibernation.
You're getting this natural urge to bulk up on lots of food for the winter, stay in bed, and do nothing.
Probably the hardest time of the year to start a diet.

But here we are
The foot is down and this blog, no matter how dull, forced or whatever, is reminder to keep going.
I just got off my butt and had that glass of water, and yes, it still tastes like crap!
Now where the hell is that marker?

The point is that we are committed to this. Not because it's a whim, or the latest trend, or just a good idea.
We are here because this may just be our last chance to make whatever time we have left on this planet.... better.
For some of us, the Diet 1 made be just plain survival.

Day 18 : Doughnuts !

12/03/2015
Steps 7060

Tasty carbs, soaked in grease and covered with sugar. My biggest dieting challenge of the week. And I blew it.
The Thursday night meeting of my Pennwriters group. Great folks, great writing, but damn, free donuts.
Last night I went right off the scales, eating 2 doughnuts and at least 5 doughnut holes.
Not a high point in my Diet 1. Didn't even follow the 1 bite rule. My brain just caved to Carb Cravings and it was a mental battle to hold the line at 2.

It doesn't help that the meetings are held in a doughnut shop. The name left out to protect the guilty. Or that I had to stare at that box of donuts for three hours.

Sooo.... How are we going to battle this one?
There are no gimmicky ways out. It just boils down to our weakest option, self-discipline.
Yes, if we had more of that, I wouldn't be writing this blog, and you wouldn't be reading it.
But that's what we are stuck with. Going into battle with a 2 inch sword and shield made out of paper mache'. To win this one, it will take just plain guts.
Next week I'll give you a play-by-play of the battle, and we will win this!
I will return with no sugar residue on my fingers and the battlefield will be littered with Doughnuts.

Wish Me Luck.

Day 17 : Companions

12/02/2015
Steps 9994
Water 6 glasses

Dieter's Hell! The person or persons you live with. You may get lucky and have that rare companion that jumps in and supports you 110% to the end, pretty much dieting right along with you.
But for the rest of us, it's life around people with their own habits, tastes and ways of doing everything, that will make it a challenge to lose even a pound.

This is just why I created my Diet 1, as a way of taking very small steps, slowly over time.
It's a lot easier sitting at the dinner table, eating smaller bites, slowly, than munching away at a dry salad or slice of toast while everyone else pigs out.

But of course it's still tough.
You're just getting comfortable, you ate an hour or so ago and you're doing fine, then somebody says “I'm hungry.”
Or you're sipping away at your glass of water, while they are guzzling down beer, wine or soda.
It always comes down to self-discipline. A lack of which is how you got here in the first place.

My Diet 1 to the rescue...
You are not stopping anything cold turkey. You're cutting back slowly on some things, while slowly starting others. You are not overwhelming your life with that trendy diet regime or spending hours a day at the gym. My Diet 1 is just a constant reminder to change slowly.
1 bite, 1 step and 1 day at a time.

If your partner or kids decide to munch away on chips while you're watching TV, don't freak out, or pig out. Take a bite, 1 bite, if you have to. Then, as always, remember to enjoy it, savor it. Even if it's only one chip.
In time, all this will become habit and you will find yourself taking smaller portions and smaller bites with out thinking.

My Diet 1 also makes life easier for the folks around you. The small changes you are making are much less of a shock for them, and so acceptance is easier and quicker. Soon, they won't pay much attention to those small portions on your plate. Or that glass of water. You still may have to do some explaining when there's a foot of snow on the ground and you are bundling up for your daily walk.
But it's all just 1 step at a time!

Day 16 : The 1 Bite Meal

12/01/2015
Steps 7761
Water  7 glasses

OK! OK! I'm eating 1 damn bite at time, and now you want me to eat a whole meal of only 1 bite?
Not quite, but close. This is an exercise in taste, time and temptation.
Try this at the next big meal function you attend, like Christmas, Easter, or even the local Chinese buffet. ( one of my old favorites).

Go around the table and put 1 bite of each food item on your plate. That's 1 bite, not 1 scoop or 1 slice. Use a teaspoon if you have to. And spread them out on the plate so it looks kind of decorative. Let folks think you're a connoisseur. Think about those $100 a plate meals you see in the movies, with lots of empty plate, surrounding some interesting blob of food.

Now when you start eating, as you try and explain to the everyone questioning your minimal food choices, pop 1 of those bites at a time in your mouth. Set your fork down and chew slowly. Real slowly.
Really focus on whatever you're eating, just like the 1 bite, 1 minute exercise in Day 3.
Stretch that 1 bite out as long as you can. Even after you swallow, savor the residual flavors for a bit, before rinsing it down with some water.

Try to get some talking done between bites, and spend some time just looking around the table, watching other folks eat. Try to visualize how many extra calories they're taking in. How much extra fat and sugar. Watch how the skinny people eat.

The challenges is to empty your plate just as slowly as everybody else.
When you are done with that first plate, don't refill it. Sit back, enjoy the company, the conversations, and that comfortable un-stuffed feeling

Now I'm not saying this is the way you need to eat all the time, it's just an exercise. You can repeat it any time you like. You can very the amounts, taking more bites of items you like, and none of less tasty things. The point as always is to thing about what and how you eat, over time changing the habits that turned you into a couch potato.

Day 15 : Triggers

11/30/2015
Steps 10890
Water 6

Yes, Triggers. What makes you want to eat? What causes you to reached for the bag of chips, candy bar or hot dog?

So far, we've been focusing on what to do when you're eating to cut down on food intake, while enjoying it more. But how do you stay away from the stuff altogether. Well, basically, you can't. You got to eat.
But if you pay attention to the Triggers that give you the idea to eat, you can sidestep some of the problem.

For me, a big one is TV, and I suspect it is a major eating Trigger for a lot of people.
First off, you are doing nothing. You're just sitting there like a slug. The term “Couch Potato” is just one of many descriptive terms that have come into the English language since the invention of television.
While you're sitting there doing nothing, all your mind has to focus on is what's on that screen. And if you pay attention, you'll see what's on that screen is a lot of food.

Number 1 on the list is commercials. Not just the obvious promotions for every restaurant chain or food product that can afford the ad rates, but look at the secondary ads for diets, pills, potions and all that other stuff dealing with food. Even cleaning products. What are they cleaning up. Food!
Food spills, Food dishes, kids covered in Food, Food, Food, Food!

And since you got a couple minutes to kill until your favorite program comes back on, it's a quick trip to the fridge, because you are suddenly hungry.

Gina and I have neatly eliminated this Trigger many years ago by not having commercial TV. Yes, we don't have cable or a dish. Nowadays, it's almost UN-American. We only watch DVD's of programs and movies we like, but that doesn't mean were safe from food Triggers. No, if you pay attention, you'll see your favorite shows loaded with them. People eating, drinking, cooking and even selling food. You'll even see people eating while watch TV. How weird is that.
Just how do you handle all this?
Well, just like eating, you can cut back. Don't run the TV 24/7 like many people do. They tell me they like something playing in the background as they work around the house.

To me it's just self-imposed brainwashing.
If you need noise in the background, put on some music.
But just like any other Triggers in life, first you learn to spot them, then you learn to deal with them. This starts at the store of course. The less snack food you bring home, the less you can eat when the Triggers tell you that you're hungry.

Next, have healthier snacks. We use popcorn most of the time. No butter, salt, or cheese. Just plain popcorn. No matter what you grab, remember our rule of 1.

1 peace, 1 bite, 1 serving, etc. Don't bring a jumbo bag of anything to the couch!
