Day 51 : Cold

It's been a bit chilly the last couple of days, well below freezing and the river is starting to get slushy. I didn't get my quota of steps in yesterday, and friends farther north are probably thinking “wimp”.
I have noticed that with age comes more sensitivity to temperature change. For decades my thermostat never went above 60 degrees. Now that mark on the thermostat seems pretty chilly, and like old folks I used to scoff at, I catch that temp gauge slowly creeping above 70.

My I barefoot glacier walking days are over, and I really doubt I'll ever walk on fire again, but I still have lots of fond memories.

Right now I have to remain focused on changing a few old habits to permanently bring my weight down to 170, maybe even 160, neither number I've seen on a bathroom scale and 30 years.
That is why I'm writing to Diet 1 blog, and maybe why you are reading it. Because most diets are short-term “feel-good” fads that seldom effect the habits that forced you to diet in the first place. A few pounds lost in the couple weeks, that come right back, often with a couple more.

If you want to lose pounds permanently, without surgery, you have to take them off the same way they went on, slowly, over time, tweaking 1 old habit after another, until the balance between energy expended, out ways energy consumed. If you are used to the fad diets, this will seem boring, day after day just 1 minor item at a time. But stick with it, and this time next year, you'll be giving advice to someone else, rebounding off another failed diet.

Day 50 : Walkin

Since it's 20 degrees outside, that's Fahrenheit, and here in Northeast Ohio we've got some snow, I'll mention going for a walk.
You folks in warmer climes don't know what you're missing. LOL

This of course is the time of year when couch potatoes tend to take root, and why us folks trying to lose weight, need to make an extra effort to get some walking in everyday.

Just watch your step out there. Snow is nice because it adds some cushioning effect and softens the strain on your feet and joints caused by cement, but roads and walkways are mostly packed snow and ice.
Like I mentioned in Day 21, walking on the grass when possible is much safer, and more comfortable.
This is only good when the snow is less than about 6 inches, over that it becomes a workout, and you'll start thinking about walking at the mall. Boring, but much safer in bad weather.
Ice

This is why you want to keep off sidewalks.
They make interesting patterns, but footprints are all miniature skating rinks, just waiting for you to plop your foot down and zing, you are flat on your back, and hoping you can get up again.

If you do remain upright, the constant strain on joints and muscles in an effort to keep moving forward will send you slipping and sliding back to the couch.

Our goal here is to keep moving during the winter, even if it means walking in the mall, or a treadmill at the gym.
And try to avoid the temptation of hot chocolate!

Day 49 : Slowing Down Fast Food

A contradiction in terms?
Fast food is here for a reason course, it's fast and it's easy. Even if you decide like me, to sit in Mickey D's for an hour or so working on your latest book, the food is still right there, and right now.
No cooking or prep work, no waitress to wait for, and unfortunately no limits.
You can eat as much as you can afford, and often do. Sure you can have a small fry for this amount, but for an added fraction of that you can supersize it.

It always looks good, getting a lot more for what seems like a little more, but then you're not buying lumber or new clothes.
You're getting extra food that you REALLY don't need, and that many argue, is not that good for you anyway.
Fast Food
This is why we draw that ugly 1 on our some every morning, and why call it Diet 1.
To keep focused on the idea that whatever kind of food, until now, you ate more than you needed, and often shoveled down so fast that was wasted!

Now we order the small fries, a regular burger, and if you are really trying, water instead of pop.
We slow the fast food down, by taking smaller bites and chewing them longer.
We get more out of less, instead of less out of more.
Over time this will bring our own weight down from supersize to regular, with the added bonus of more money in our pocket.

1 bite at a time, and 1 day at a time!

Day 48 : Saturday

We saw our first dead Christmas tree yesterday, and the big stores are packing up the Christmas merchandise they couldn't dump at 75 % off.

This weekend is the last holiday blast for many folks, and time to reminisce, recover and regroup for the coming year.

I'm limping around the house with a sore lower left back from New Year's Eve. It's either from dragging a sheet of 3/4 inch plywood around the house, or too much tea for dinner that night. Could be a kidney, or muscle. At 64, pains tend to get hard to separate. LOL

The point of course is that pain not only slows you down, and gives you a good excuse just to sit and do nothing, it usually brings on food in an effort to make you feel better.
“Fat Math 101”

I still managed to build a flip up landing for the basement stairs with that plywood, and got in 7000 steps or so yesterday. But I did move a lot slower and with more deliberation, and yes, I did spend more time on the couch.

What I did mentally, was something I've always done with pain, illness, and most adversity, I simply considered it an annoyance instead of an excuse. A simple difference in attitude that changes you from a victim to Victor. Sounds a bit cliche, but it's served me well for over 60 years.

And though annoyances seem to increase in frequency as the years go by, to me they are all still just an annoyance. Something trying keep me from doing what I want to do, like someone blocking the aisle at the store. If they won't move, you go around, don't just give up.

I'm not Superman, or anyone special, I just made a choice at a very young age that what I wanted to do comes first, and anything that may try to block that, I try not to make very important.
It's just mental terminology, labels you put on things every day. One label “excuse” gives you the OK to stop what you are doing. Another label “annoyance” challenges you to work it out and keep moving.

This year I moving toward 170 lbs. and anything, including strained muscles, are simply an annoyance in my effort to get there. So whenever you can, stop giving in to excuses, push on with Diet 1, to your own magic number.

Day 47 : Happy New Year 2016

Here we go folks, another new year, and another shot at the future.
Ready for that New Year's resolution?

If you are 1 of us Diet 1 folks, it will be easy. Yes, we have only 1 simple resolution for 2016. It's easy to write down, and easy to remember. Just 3 digits.
Yes, you guessed it! Our goal for 2016 is that magic number of pounds we want to see on the bathroom scale by the end of our Diet 1 adventure.

Mine is 170

Whatever yours is 120, 150, 200, or even 300, mark it down right now in your Diet 1 Journal, and paste it on top of your monitor at work. Better yet, make it the wall paper on all you electronic gizmo's and tape a big 1 on top of the fridge.

Mark a red line on the bathroom scale, and add a little note on the sun visor in your car.

Yes, we just have this 1 simple goal, and if we keep that 1 in mind over the coming year, we will see that magic number pop up on the bathroom scale, and continue to see it as the years go by.

Remember!
1 bite at a time, and 1 day at a time!

Day 39 : Christmas Eve

Another Christmas party tonight !!
Lots of food and drink piled up on tables, with lots of bite-sized snacks.
Another day to crank up the willpower and reminders.
Another day to remember where you've been, and where you plan to go.
Another day to break more of the old “pig out” traditions and start new, more responsible ones.
The first thing of course, before you leave the house, get that 1 on your thumb. You might want to get in the holiday spirit and write it in red and green. Maybe at some glitter. I'm going to put a little red ribbon around my thumb to.
A nice conversation starter, and it will make it harder to snack if I'm chatting about my Diet 1 blog.
As soon as you get there, grab a glass of water, and put in a wine glass, if you want to blend in. If you are holding a drink while you wander around, it will be a lot harder to hold onto a plate of food and eat.
Next, if possible, stay out of the room or rooms with the food. Make an effort to chat with folks that are not “hovering” over the buffet.
Also plan to come late and leave early, hit the party at it's peak, when you have the most people and conversations to distract you from the food.

Try to enjoy yourself, and Merry Christmas to all and to all just 1 bite :o)

Day 38 : Small Changes

12/23/2015

I still have need to have a lot more willpower, about but snacks, especially this time of year with trays of cookies and candy popping up everywhere.

Today I slipped at Flying J, when I stopped to get gas.
I usually pay at the pumps, but decided to walk in and back to get more exercise. It was a nice thought, but I wasn't ready for a checkout counter covered with hot food and an overly helpful lady suggesting what I should get.

I fell for the chicken wings, and just wanted a couple, but she mentioned 6 and I caved.
I did hold out as 2 separate people offered to add a slice of pizza for a penny.
In years past, I not only would've jumped at anything for a penny, I would've come in just for that, whether I needed gas are not.
A small improvement, but even small improvements add up over time.

Another nice small improvement was last night when I took Gina out for Mexican. For the first time in memory, as they brought out the main course, I mentally made the decision that half was going home in a doggy bag. I was not making the decision to take home leftovers after I had stuff myself, and there was still food on the plate. It was a decision I consciously made before I started.

That is a very good sign. Another sign that after only 38 days, things are changing, and as time goes by, those changes will add up, as the weight goes down....
