Up at 4 AM to pee, then busy brain syndrome cranked in and I finally got out of bed at 5.
I even woke up the cats. Had new ideas for a couple of new books and got them jotted down.
I also got 2 big crayons painted for Gina's display for the book show next week at the Beaver County Bookfest.

At 6, we drove to Painesville for Domino night at Franks and Carley's birthday party. Had a great time, but really blew Diet 1. Started out okay, but then got buzzed on wine and just munched away on snacks the whole night. Got home bloated and tired, and went to bed.

I'm sitting on the deck, watching a couple Eagles cruising around the Valley. Also saw a beaver being shadowed by a turtle? And right now, getting caught up on yesterday's blog.

I worked on Bernie's camper yesterday, and had to many snacks while I was there. Then I went home, cut the grass and worked on Gina's book display more.
Also getting ready to print my 1st coffee mugs in 25 years.

Today I worked on Gina's displaced some more and also stopped over at Bernie's for a visit.
A quiet day, all in all.
Gina has not been doing well with her knee lately. When I got back from Bernie's, she was crying while doing the laundry, and she was pretty bummed the whole day. Stressing over her upcoming knee operation plus worrying about Wheezer, who's been sneezing for a couple weeks now, also with a cold or something in his eye.
He started life 2 years ago, wheezing, hence the name, and Gina's always been more attached to him than the other cats.

AMAZING!! 2 straight days of picnics with tons of REAL GOOD food, and I only took on 2 lbs. Think about it.
In years past, what I ate all day, at either event would have been just my normal munching, and I would have been packing up as many leftovers as I could get away with.
Most of which would have been finished off the next day, some probably on the drive home.
So now it's Monday, and I need to get back to the normal, meaning Diet 1.

THINK ABOUT THAT

Most diets are abnormal! They are things you do because you have to. They are often the opposite of your normal behavior. This is why they usually fail, and often cause a rebound to a worse condition than before.
That is why Diet 1 is a 12 month plan and why I have been jabbering away for the last 287 days.
What Diet 1 is doing, what I am doing and what you are doing, if you have been following along, is changing what is normal. We are changing our behavior and habits slowly until what once was abnormal, becomes normal.

Where filling a dinner plate to overflowing was once habit, is now abnormal. Two burgers seems odd and Jumbo anything is way too much.

After 3, 6 or 12 months on Diet 1, it's not just that you think differently about what you eat, but your body has become accustomed to those changes to. We don't go for seconds anymore, because you are full after the first round.
That “eat fast and grab more” urge you lived with most of your life is slowly diminishing, being replaced by “slow down and enjoy it.”

It won't all be changed after 12 months of Diet 1, but enough will, and will continue to change as time goes by, because what you learned on Diet 1 will continue to become your normal behavior.
Like seeing a picture of yourself in that ridiculous outfit in high school, you will look back in years to come and chuckle how you once shoveled food like it was your last meal. You may even wonder how you could have even eaten that.
Anyway, 80 days to go to my b-day and I'm thrilled.

Breakfast – French toast and broiled shrimp

Yes, yesterday's pig out added 2 pounds, and last night when we got home it felt like 10. Of course, in reality, it was a lot less than what I once would have eaten at a picnic. I had no chips, dips, sauces or creamy salads. No junk added to my burgers, not even cheese, and no sugary drinks.
And today was the 43rd annual Breakfast Club picnic, REAL GOOD food, and lots of it. And I actually held back on some. Only one piece of Gerry's amazing French toast, and amazingly, just one home fry. Yes you heard me, not one helping, but one slice of a potato. I did let go a bit on the broiled shrimp, but hey, shrimp cooked on an open grill, that's tough to walk away from.

That was pretty much it for the day, changes he was acting up, and I was tired. When we got home we both took naps, except for a walk, late in the evening, we didn't do anything else rest of the day. I didn't even fire up the computer.

I'm on the deck at 6 AM, and it's just getting light out, cool and damp. Watching a fox on the far bank of the river, as a flock of geese go by in formation, heading downriver to the lake, I suppose.
It was interesting to see that the cat sitting next to me, was also watching the fox. In a straight line of sight we're talking 150 to 200 yards. For me, the fox is an interesting bit of nature to enjoy, for the cat, an instant caution sign. Something that could spell danger if it moves any closer.
Remember, the fox is not only a long distance away in the valley below, but on the other side of the river, but the cat still watches it as if it were 10 feet away.

Today was the annual picnic for the Area 1 writers group at Presque Isle, PA. Surprisingly, I won the writing contest for the 2nd year in a row.
And once again it was a food pig out, that left Diet 1 in the dust, but did give me an idea for Diet 1 in the future. And I'll experiment with it tomorrow at our annual Breakfast Club get together. Another all-day food fest.
Diet 1 menu

When you are going to an event, you know is a major food fest, a dinner party, picnic, etc., make yourself menu. On the list write down all the food you might eat there, burgers, chips, hot dogs, brownies, cupcakes, etc., and carry the list with you.
You can also add the estimated calorie count of each item. And at the top of the page your calorie limit for the day.
Now at the event, follow all the Diet 1 rules you can muster, 1 bite, 1 helping, eating as slow as possible etc. And here's a new Diet 1 rule, don't open anything.
In other words, don't be the first 1 in line at the food table.
Don't rummage through the food table.
Don't volunteer to run the grill.
Don't open any unopened bags of chips, etc.
If you bring food, make sure it's real good, and not a lot. You do not want to take home any leftovers.

Now back to the list. You can have only one of everything on the list. Even that is probably enough to send your Diet 1 reeling, but just one of each thing on the list is probably far less than you're used to eating at these get-togethers. The idea of the list is to remind you of how much you used to eat, and to challenge you to pull back even more.
Don't try to fill your plate with one of everything on the list. Start at top of the list and get just one item, say a hamburger, and take that back to your seat. Don't get up for more food until you have eaten that burger... slowly. Also, don't pile on the condiments. Try just a plain burger or hot dog. Each one of those condiments you add to your sandwich may double or triple the calorie count.

Also try to keep busy. Chat with folks, move around, take pictures etc. Pull out your checklist and let someone ask you what you are doing. Explaining it to them will reinforce it, and keep you away from the food table. You may even help someone else who needs to lose a few pounds. Don't Proselytize. If someone asked, give answers, but don't try to sell it. Most people and friends in particular don't like salesmen, whether it has to do with healthy eating, religion or politics.

Back to the list. Your goal is not just to it down to only one of each item on the list, but to make it through today with as few of those items checked off as possible. Even if you checked off every item on your list, and had only one of each, you've probably have half of what you are used to. And of course, every item left blank on the list is just icing on your Diet 1 cake. For me, it did not go well.

Just sitting here on the deck at 6 am, getting yesterday's blog post on paper while I enjoy the sites and sounds of the valley below!
Watching a heron wonder along the river right now,
and watching herons swoop majestically below is not a bad way to start your morning. A damn sight better than rant radio and rush-hour traffic!

Except for a morning and evening walk with Gina, the day was spent on the computer working up stuff for the Western Pennsylvania Book Fair on September 10th.
Also helping Gina on her table display. It was nice to see her get excited about watercolor paints and brushes.

Nothing like paints, brush and paper to shove your mind back a few decades and smash through that creative wall that surrounds adulthood.

I also dug up an old Tens unit for Gina's bad knee, a stopgap measure for the pain until the operation October.

I broke my daily eating routine with a burrito at McDonald's on our morning walk. Didn't seem like much, but it was.

Yep, I'm finally moving back down on the VA weigh in. My lowest weight so far on Diet 1, and with a bit of discipline, I'll be saying that every 2 weeks right through to November 17.

This was the usual VA weigh-in day, with too many snacks at Bernie's on the way home, so I had to tighten my belt the rest of the day. For me, that is not easy because Thursday is also my Area 1 writer's group in Erie, PA. at Tim Horton's.
So I end up spending 4 hours chatting with friends about writing and books, the whole time with a big box of free donuts sitting in front of me. Try that on your diet! I managed to get through the evening only eating 2.

So what happens after you reach your weight goal?

I don't know about you, but I'll be putting together another book......
Diet 1: a Krash diet that won't Crash.”

But seriously, you have to start thinking about the end of Diet 1, when you reach that final weight goal.
When you get there, you'll have to level off, without going nuts. You'll start taking it a bit more food every day just to stay at your set weight, with out going back up.

This will take some time, and once you get it together, and start to see how life is at your new weight, you can decide where to go from there.
You may decide that you're a bit more comfortable, and look a bit better, a few pounds heavier. Or you may decide to keep going down a bit more, just don't go anorexic on us!

The whole point of Diet 1 is to get to weight you can live with!

Once you hit that goal, celebrate a bit. Then settle in and enjoy the old you, the one you left behind many years ago. Get new cloths, a new haircut, new makeup, etc.
Go out and have some fun! Take some fashion photos and send them to the friend you haven't seen in a while.
Apply for new job, just for the hell of it.
I'm renewing my drivers license, just to see the new photo. After all, you've just spent whole year getting to this point, so get out there and enjoy.

Snacks – small piece of cheese, small popcorn

It was close on the scale, but it wiggled on the 188 mark, a pound and a half down from yesterday. I don't tend to get to excited about anything, but I'm thinking about it!!

For a change, I had no snacks after dinner. That was tough!. That, plus a long walk on the beach in the evening, (Nice sunset), compensated for junk snacking at Bernie's earlier in the day.
I got the Marvin the mouse story nailed down pretty good today and checked it out with a new writing group.
If you minor things around the house, and a walk with Jean in the morning. Food wise, I probably ate less today than any day in the recent past.

Taste and Flavor Triggers

One thing I've noticed is that hunger is just an empty feeling, or feeling of something not quite right in my stomach. That I can deal with for hours, and it goes away entirely, if I'm occupied with something important. But once I eat something, I have a taste trigger in my mouth, and in my head, that focuses the sensation of hunger, and cranks up the need for more food. This is the reason for an old rule of mine, about the order in which I eat food at a meal.

When eating, I always save the least favorite food for last, so the last taste trigger in my mouth will be the one I would least want more of.

Think about it!!

Try popping something you really like in your mouth, say, as salted peanut. That fires up all sorts of flavor triggers, and you are probably reaching for the next while you are still chewing. This is the whole concept behind snacks. Small items you don't feel guilty about eating, one after the other, but all are huge flavor bombs, blasting your taste buds.

Now take the next peanut and wash it off with hot water. Yep, get all the salt and excess oils off, and pop that in your mouth. It still has a bit of peanut flavor, but it sure ain't much of a flavor blast like the last one. Now which one of those would you be more likely want more of?

New thought about recording your weight, one color, say Black for going down, Red when it goes up. Just another reminder.

Down another pound, and still a lot more energy last few days.
Gina didn't sleep much last night, her knee is getting pretty bad, and she has a hard time putting up with the pain. Like a lot of pain at our age, it bothers her most when she's not moving.

We went for a walk about 5:30 AM. It was still dark, but there was a bright moon.
As usual, I'm sitting here enjoying the morning on the deck and scribbling in this book as the sun comes up.

We hit the road about 10 AM, with a quick cruise around town to look at the D-Day remnants. Storm clouds this morning got folks packed up a lot faster than usual and most of the army was gone, with just a few scattered tents still up.
Next we took quiet back roads to Harpersfield covered bridge for Music on theRiver. A great annual get-together of acoustic music, lots of bluegrass. Several of our friends were scheduled to play, but the fun part was all the scattered musicians just moving about and joining each other in jam sessions.

We headed home about 3 PM, stopping for ice cream on the way. Out of habit, I finished off half a sandwich Gina left in the fridge. With the ice cream, I was out for an hour on the couch.

We did get another walk in as it was getting dark, and we got little wet as weekend storm finally hit about 8 PM.

Up at 4:30, and cranking out ideas for a series of kid /adult books on Relational Aptitude
( how things relate to each other). An ability rapidly diminishing in our automated digital age, but still very much needed.

I was out for a walk while it was still dark, and passed a couple of skunks still munching away in yards, then out on the deck writing as soon as it was light, about 6:30.

Still snacking too much yesterday, but no actual meals. I had a lot more energy, and I'm perkier this morning. I'm seriously considering the idea of ending the concept of “meals”, and switching to a snacking diet. Just got to keep the snacks healthy.

It's not just what you eat, but how much. It's been pretty obvious lately that eating more than a handful of anything sends my system into overload. This is really evident with high carb things like bread, chips, and pasta. All will put me on the couch snoring in 20 minutes.

Also, I'm getting used to smaller amounts of food. Yesterday I made a roll up with a slice of cheese and turkey, that's it, no bread or anything. As I ate, I was thinking “this is a lot.”
A year ago, it would have been just another item stacked on my plate, and downed in a couple of big bites, as I reached for the next.

I spent the 1st half of the in a Photoshop class in Akron, with my 1st food of the day, a banana, about noon. I got back to Conneaut about 5 PM, then Gina and I headed over to the USO dinner and dance at the community center.
It must've been a real memory blast for the World War II vets, seeing all those 20-year-old girls dressed to the hilt, just like 70 years ago.
Of course, it wasn't lost on all the younger guys either. It was a great time, and for a couple days Conneaut swells to about 4 times its normal population. A nice boost for the local economy, and every year couple more folks decide to check out the real estate.

One of the cats got me up at midnight, and I had to sleep in the guest room, as my thinking was disturbing, Gina. I probably could've been good at telekinesis, if I'd had a more assertive personality, but that's for another book.

As it sits right now, my Diet 1 is working out just right for a standard story plot.

Our hero muddles through the 1st two thirds of the story, with everything moving along okay, then near the end, blows it, and shit hits the fan. When all looks lost, he saves the day, gets the girl. And everybody runs out to buy the next book.

Of course, I'm not a hero, just an overweight artist working on breaking 60 years of eating habits in 12 months, some of which are the direct result of genes I was born with.

I really blew it at lunch, deciding to meet Gina, Doll and Kathy in town and take them all out for Mexican.
I proceeded to empty a bowl of chips and salsa even before the main course, and then didn't even think of a doggie bag, just wolfing it all down like it was my last meal.

After lunch, I spent a couple hours of Bernie's shop chatting about health food, all the time snacking on a jar of peanut butter pretzels he had.
